Introducing five blogs from The Miscellany News!

September 4th, 2009 by Ruby Cramer, Editor in Chief

The Miscellany News is pleased to announce the launch of five blogs, our latest venture into the burgeoning world of online content and new media. These blogs—The Rose and the Gray, Travel Notes, Exposure, VC Fit and From the Newsroom—will provide you with rich, diverse and innovative content, supplementing our weekly print publication and our online and multimedia coverage at miscellanynews.com. Continuously published since 1866—only five years after Vassar’s founding—The Miscellany News has long been dedicated to thorough reporting, creative thinking and exemplary writing, and we hope that these blogs will continue in this long-standing tradition of college journalism.

  • From the Newsroom—the blog you’re currently reading—is a venue for the editors of the Miscellany to provide updates on and analyses of breaking campus news. We found that, although we could cover most campus news with our print publication and with online articles, the format of a comprehensive news article did not allow for us to deliver real-time news updates without delay or incompleteness. Thus, From the Newsroom will enable us to disseminate quick yet comprehensive reports of College events as they happen. The blog also gives the editors the opportunity to deliver news about the Miscellany itself.
  • The Rose and the Gray will feature thoughtful and stimulating commentary and discussion from alumnae/i on current Vassar issues. As graduates of the College, our contributers have a unique and distinctive perspective on Vassar. From the perspectives gained in their post-graduate lives, these writers will begin to think creatively about the future of the institution. Writers include James Kelly ‘09, Marcelo Buitron ‘09, Andrew Bennett ‘09, Laureen Cantwell ‘06, John Delap ‘05, Natania Gazek ‘09, Riane Harper ‘09, Amory Meltzer ‘09, Peter Rotundo ‘09, Timothy Wan ‘97, Morgan Warners ‘08, Kelsey Woods ‘08 and former Miscellany News Editor in Chief Anita Varma ‘08.
  • Travel Notes is a compilation of stories, reports and ruminations from juniors traveling abroad. Here you’ll find quality travel writing from Vassar students sprinkled across the globe. For the Fall 2009 semester, Travel Notes will be feature posts from juniors Samantha Adler, Audrey Brooks, Emma Coates-Finke, Lucy Richardson and Devin Schiff, as well as former Miscellany News Managing Editor Allison Good and former Sports Editor Kelly Capehart.
  • Exposure is the photojournalism blog of The Miscellany News, featuring the work of our own photographers, as well as Vassar community members producing outstanding work in the medium. The blog aims to capture the visual culture of the Vassar College campus.
  • VC Fit is a comprehensive health and wellness resource for students written by students. The blog will cover a variety of healthy lifestyle tips, ranging from workout ideas and class descriptions to tasty recipes and advice for keeping your meal plan-supported diet fresh and nourishing. Primary contributors are Kara Voght ‘11 and Charlie Gray ‘11, as well as Ezra Roth ‘10, who will be providing updates as the Food Committee Chair.

We hope that you enjoy these five blogs—continue to check our website for blog posts, online updates and multimedia content over the next week, and look for the first issue of Miscellany News Volume 143 on Thursday, Sept. 10!
