Vassar Student Association (VSA) President Mathew Leonard ’11 has confirmed that the amendments to the structure of the VSA Council will go to referendum. Less than a week after the amendments narrowly failed to pass in Council, the student body has collected approximately 400 signatures in favor of sending the changes to a referendum. As of yesterday, the petition met the April 1 deadline set by the Judicial Board to collect 360 signatures.
After the motion to add Article VII, which would have created the position of senator, to the VSA Constitution, the only way the proposed changes shall pass before spring elections is if 15 percent of the VSA’s members—roughly 360 students—petition to send the amendment to a referendum.
The Judicial Board is meeting tomorrow, April 3, to determine what proportion of the student population would have to participate in the referendum for the vote to count.
The online vote will take place on Thursday, April 7—before spring elections—and will determine the number and type of positions available for the 26th VSA Council. Results of the referendum will be announced on Saturday, April 9.
