I appreciate the professor's attempts to find a way that Islam can come into the modern world but I think all such attempts will fail. Islam, unlike any other major faith is, as Bertrand Russell observed almost a century ago, the only religion which is totalitarian in structure and ideology. And there's no reforming a totalitarian ideology.
You can't have a kinder, nicer Nazism or a reformed Marxism. Totalitarian ideologies must be discarded. They can never be squared with such things as liberty, true democracy and equality under the law. I don't doubt that many Muslims now and in the future will be pretty much passive about all the pathological instructions that their religion demands of them, but that is not germane. The religion itself, in all its totalitarian make-up, will remain and, guaranteed here, will always function as a death cult for at least a certain percentage of Muslims when they don't get their way. Ultimately, it's the relgion itself which is rotten and, though personally not religious, I don't see rottenness in any other major faith. The Islamic theological blueprint is flawed to its very core. No other religion's theological blueprint is. This is the essence of the problem.

So much of this resonates for me. I mean, no doubt it does for so many ABC's and other cross-Asian-culture kids. It's a story we all know.

One of the most difficult challenges I had growing up was simply dealing with the smack I'd get from my American friends whenever I obediently followed my mother's rules. I spent most of high school wanting to shake off that "overachieving Asian" stereotype - mostly out of my own social need to be accepted, rather than out of a personal vendetta against my mom.

I used to think very critically of this kind of parenting, to be honest. I'd look at my non-Asian counterparts, who were allowed the liberties I was denied, and wonder if I would've been a happier high schooler or grade schooler if my mom wasn't so strict. Maybe. What is there to gain from being raised in a world without sleepovers? A world with aching fingers because we were made to practice our violins until our hands cramped up? I don't know. A good topic for a book, I guess. (kidding)

Anyways, what I do know is that our parents act in our best interest, whether we are Asians, Caucasians, Bananas, or Apples. It could take years for some us to realize that. Others never do. Call 'em Tiger Moms or just plain bitches if you will... but surely somewhere along the line, they did something right.

I can only hope to be half as good a mother as my mine is.
