During the latest Late Night at the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center, Marco Maggi made a guest appearance to discuss his current exhibit with curator Mary-Kay Lombino. He discussed the idea “Lentissimo,” and how his art consisted of grand gestures that must be then meticulously studied in order to be appreciated. He made intricate cut outs on large stacks of paper, envelopes, and paper in projector slides, as well as intricate designs carved into tinfoil, a mirror, eye lenses, and Plexiglas. Maggi’s talk was followed by Samantha Smith’s musical performance.

This past Saturday night, on February 18, 2012 was the third Annual Student Faculty Basketball Game, hosted and put together by the Senior Class Gift and Dean Roellke’s Office.

A historic event in the current students’ memory, this year’s winning team would be breaking a tie between the Faculty and Student teams.  The competition was tight, which the students behind for the first quarter.  Teresa Garrett scored the first points for the Faculty team, making herself the first woman to score any points the annual competition since its inception two years ago.  The crowd was just as large as ever, and they whipped around their “Just Brew It” towels enthusiastically. Game commentators DB Brown and Senior Class Gift co-chair Race Bottini ’12 punctuated the game with their witty banter, playing to their various biases and keeping the crowd engaged.

Even though the score was very tight all game, with the students behind for the majority of it, the most important action happened in the last five minutes, when the Students gained momentum and surged ahead.  It wasn’t til the very last moment that their victory was secured, which allowed the tensions in the crowd to build and build. The Students’ victory brought on an explosive celebration at the end of the event.

All in all the night was a success, and raised $2,000 for the Senior Class Gift’s supplementation of the Internship Grant Fund.

Last Wednesday, four Vassar seniors – Samantha Ives, Juliana Halpert, Noah Lourie Mosher, and Sam Shin – held a reception for their art show in the Palmer Gallery. The exhibition, titled ‘the house shaped hole,’ featured work produced by the four artists in a range of mediums. Photographs, crocheted orbs, videoscreens, and watercolor paintings adorned the walls while sculptures filled floor space. Lourie Mosher executed a performance piece throughout the reception, throughout which he gave visitors portions of baked and unbaked bread with instructions for baking. The reception was well-attended by students, faculty, and even parents–and, if nothing else, the guests certainly left sated.

the house shaped hole will be on view in the Palmer Gallery through Thursday, March 1.
